Year 2000 Testing

Preparing organizations for ensuring Y2K readiness

Overview
Can you test everything you need to prior to Year 2000?
Tick, tick, tick… The clock keeps ticking away while Information Technology organizations, business units and end users should be conducting year 2000 testing. For some clients, there is an overwhelming magnitude of systems, databases, and even spreadsheets that you need to ensure are ready for the year 2000. Is there enough time and resources to get what you "need" tested now?

CoreTech Approach
CoreTech Consulting Group, Inc. has emerged as a leader in helping organizations support their Y2K testing efforts by understanding and managing all of the complexities that arise in Y2K projects. Our results-oriented testing framework blends strong technical expertise with crucial business knowledge and organizational skills. We help manage this potentially costly and resource-intensive process to:

  • Reduce costs

  • Better utilize existing resources

  • Compress implementation schedules

  • Transfer knowledge

  • Retain tools and skills for reuse in future projects

The CoreTech Testing Framework contains all of the information needed to manage a successful Y2K Testing Project. The success of the framework lies in the early identification and weighing of options and the development of plans that minimize and manage business disruption.

Service Features
The CoreTech Testing Framework divides a project into four distinct phases as follows:

phases.gif (8011 bytes)

1. Assessment Phase of a testing engagement is intended to understand and document overall readiness of the organization to complete Y2K testing. This is the time to determine if the organization has (1) a separate Y2K test environment, (2) a Y2K test methodology, (3) any existing test results that can be reused, (4) appropriate resources (e.g. people and test tools), etc. The assessment phase is completed early in the project to clearly identify the gaps that must be filled to ensure successful Y2K testing.

2. Planning Phase is intended to document the organization’s Y2K testing approach. Based on the Y2K remediation solutions (e.g. windowing), an appropriate test strategy must be selected and implemented for all business units. A test plan covers all testing related activities and deliverables. Plans explain (1) who will do the testing, (2) when the tests will be scheduled; (3) where and why the tests will be done; (4) what will be tested and what will not be tested; and finally (5) how the tests will be executed.

3. Test Phase completes the evaluation of the organization’s critical assets against Y2K readiness criteria and produces comprehensive documentation to support the due diligence process. The testing team will remain focused on business critical items, document executed script, appropriate tests and results. As the clock ticks onward, this ability to perform continuous triage is crucial. The constant focus on the evolving business risk differentiates CoreTech’s Testing Framework from traditional testing approaches and adds significant value for the organization. At every point in the process, the organization will know exactly where the risks lie.

4. Release Phase provides the opportunity to review the full outcome of the Y2K testing project. Test results and events are summarized into a Test Report and a complete documentation package is assembled which is then analyzed to ensure that all Y2K concerns have been addressed.
